QUARANTHINGS – Vince Sabillena

“During these times, it is a value that we must practice. Don’t get me wrong that patience is unimportant, it is a virtue. It has always been important but it has become more necessary as time passes. The government, doctors and even our parents remind us: we are living in a world that is different from what used to be normal. A fast and instant normal is no longer normal; a slow and a more effective normal is the new standard of our daily living. With this new lifestyle, people are having a hard time adjusting to what could be we facing for the next year or two.
My transition to this new normal has been fruitful. My family and I are safe from the harm of the pandemic, COVID-19. I learned new skills that I can only learn at home with time. I have more time for my favorite hobbies like reading books. The most wonderful thing is bonding with family. Despite coping well, everything is put to hold. Plans for summer or even for the whole year are cancelled. Going outside for minors and senior citizens are prohibited. Attending mass inside the church is possible, yet risky. Being physically close to others is dangerous and we should exercise social distancing. Even getting a haircut from a barber is difficult. With all of these, it is near impossible to be patient because this is not what we are used to live in. The time in quarantine has showed us a glimpse of the near future. It presented to us that we must work more efficiently and productively having patience. Values that have been the epicenter of the time that was given to us reform ourselves and prepare.
Working much more efficiently and productively than what we did in the past is a heavy task that we will approach. We will strive for a positive and better outcome through this task. When we thought that what we did was enough, the bars have been raised higher than ever. Having patience though is a heavier task for everyone. We apply our good attitudes while waiting and using time properly. We know that this period is hard but take this as a challenge for us to be patient and better. The only way we can go through this difficult time is being as one exercising values. Praying is also a way to overcoming these trials. A Chinese Proverb clearly states that one moment of patience may ward off great disaster, one moment of impatience however may make life harder. If we learn to be patient, coping with a new normal will be not as hard as we thought it would be.”
